Foreign students in Poland. Report on the study of the situation of foreign students staying in Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic

The report summarises the results of a study conducted by the Foundation for the Development of the Education System during the COVID-19 pandemic in the fourth quarter of 2020. The study concerned the areas and methods of support provided by Polish universities to students coming to Poland, mainly within the Erasmus+ programme mobility, but also under bilateral programs and agreements between universities.

Representatives of 20 Polish universities, which have so far been the most active in receiving foreign students, were invited to the study. The research was exploratory in nature and consisted mainly in identifying effective practices applied by universities in the field of care and support for foreign students. In total, 20 individual in-depth interviews were conducted with HEI or faculty coordinators of the Erasmus+ programme heads of foreign cooperation departments or other units supervising student exchange or HEI departments of international programmes.

As part of the study, descriptions of good practices used by the Polish HEIs were collected in the field of such issues as communication with students, offered administrative, legal, medical and cultural support, assistance in adapting to the new realities of teaching or the implementation of practical classes. The dissemination of these activities may contribute to the development of even higher standards of care for foreign students, both during the difficult time of the pandemic and after its end.
